Royal Caribbean to sell Legend of the Seas to Thomson Cruises

British cruise line, Thomson Cruises, a subsidiary of TUI UK & Ireland, has announced the acquisition of the Legend of the Seas cruise ship from Royal Caribbean International. The news of the acquisition of the 63,000 tonne cruise ship which will sail under the name – ‘TUI Discovery 2’ by 2017 was made by TUI Group as part of its global cruise business expansion strategy.

The news comes days before the official launch of the TUI Discovery which was also acquired from RCI and was the sister ship to the Legend – the ‘Splendour of the Seas’. The acquisition will move the Thomson cruise Fleet to six (6) with the company expecting to add Mein Schiff 1 (2018) and Mein Schiff 2 (2019) ships, however, the Thomson Majesty and Spirit will leave at the end of 2017.

The ship will be 22 years old when it joins the fleet next year but the recent refurbishment means 13 new cabins and balconies were added to Deck 6 cabins. Legend of the Seas has 915 cabins and some of the features include – eight bars, an outdoor poolside movie screen, rock-climbing wall, mini-golf course, indoor swimming pool and spa.

Holidays on board the ship will start selling by July 2016 with itinerates expected to be announced in due course.
